Packaging protects our products and ensures their safe transport and use. The new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) introduces uniform requirements for packaging across Europe. The aim is to reduce packaging waste, promote recycling, and strengthen the circular economy.
The PPWR is of particular importance to Dr. Weigert, as we place a wide range of packaging on the European market. Consequently, the new regulations affect many areas of our company: from packaging development and procurement to sustainability management.
A key focus is packaging recyclability. We already continuously assess our packaging for circularity. The results show that more than 90% of our packaging already meet the recyclability requirements that will not become mandatory until 2035.
Another topic is the use of recycled materials. Minimum recycled content requirements will apply to many types of plastic packaging in the future. However, exceptions exist for categories such as packaging for hazardous goods and medical devices, which account for a large portion of our packaging. For other product groups, we are already evaluating suitable material solutions to meet future requirements.
Packaging reuse is also becoming increasingly important. Even before the PPWR came into force, Dr. Weigert began implementing concepts for reusing large containers such as drums and IBCs. Initial business units are already being supplied with reconditioned and refilled containers.
Furthermore, requirements regarding transparency and documentation are increasing. We have therefore comprehensively reviewed all our packaging materials and can demonstrate compliance with current regulatory standards.
The PPWR confirms many of the sustainability initiatives Dr. Weigert has been pursuing for years. At the same time, it drives innovation and the further development of sustainable packaging solutions. Our goal remains clear: to use resources responsibly and design packaging more sustainably.
