The war in Ukraine has been going on for more than three years and there is still no end in sight. The destruction caused by Russian bombing has also affected the infrastructure right from the start. This is why the Association of Ukrainian Public Utilities asked Germany for help back in spring 2022, which ultimately led to the founding of the non-profit organisation ‘Water for Ukraine’ on the German side. The initiative was immediately able to organise aid convoys with donations in kind. Material such as vehicles, emergency generators, pumps and technical relief supplies totalling 5 million euros have been brought to Lviv (Lemberg) so far. Donations totalling €300,000 have been received to finance the transport and other aid supplies. The organisation is now supported by over 50 municipal companies, waterworks, energy companies, churches, religious communities and companies.
Elmar Thyen, the co-initiator and chairman of the association, reports on the phone that the 20th convoy is due to set off in mid-May 2025. According to Thyen, the volunteers usually set off on Thursday and arrive in Lviv on Saturday after travelling around 1,400 kilometres, where they are welcomed by representatives of the Ukrainian public utility company. The return journey will begin on Sunday. The last convoy, Thyen explains, consisted of 7 donor and 4 escort vehicles as well as 23 drivers, with some of the helpers sacrificing days of their holidays for this mission. Further distribution within Ukraine is organised by Ukrainian helpers, with German members of the association also accompanying the onward journey to the east, reports Elmar Thyen. According to Thyen, a certain exhaustion can be felt among the people on these intra-Ukrainian distribution journeys. This makes it all the more important for him that humanitarian aid, such as that provided by "Water for Ukraine", is reliably maintained in this difficult situation.
Bernd Stranghöner, Chairman of the Management Board at Dr. Weigert, learnt about the association through a personal contact. "For me, the aims of the association are absolutely convincing. I find the voluntary commitment and the consistency of the assistance exemplary and worthy of support". What's more, the term ‘water’ not only provided the framework for the creation of the association, but is also of central importance to Dr. Weigert in terms of production and hygiene issues. So it's a good match. Dr Weigert has therefore donated 10,000 euros to "Water for Ukraine".
